#[cfg(test)]
mod tests {
use super::*;
#[test]
fn test_something() {
// arrange
let data = setup();
// act
let result = operation(&data);
// assert
assert_eq!(result, expected);
}
}
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Clean, consistent structure
Test Naming Conventions¶
Naming follows Rust convention: test_<feature>_<scenario>
Examples:
- test_marc8_ascii - MARC-8 ASCII decoding
- test_record_roundtrip - Record serialize/deserialize
- test_leader_too_short - Error handling
- test_empty_record_builder - Edge case
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Clear, descriptive names
2. Integration Tests in tests/ Directory¶
File Organization¶
| File | Tests | Focus |

Test Data Organization¶
Tests use data files in tests/data/:
tests/data/
├── simple_book.mrc
├── music_score.mrc
├── with_control_fields.mrc
├── multi_records.mrc
├── multilingual_records.mrc
├── authority_record.mrc
├── holdings_record.mrc
└── ...
Status: ✓ GOOD - Real MARC data for integration testing
Integration Test Pattern¶
Tests create realistic records or load from files:
#[test]
fn test_field_query_with_subjects() {
let record = create_test_record(); // Helper function
// Use library API as real user would
let subjects = record.fields_by_indicator("650", None, Some('0'));
assert_eq!(subjects.count(), expected);
}
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Tests real-world usage patterns
3. Test Coverage Analysis¶
Coverage by Module Category¶
| Category | Unit | Integration | Total | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core Data | 86 | 31 | 117 | ✓ Excellent |
| I/O (Readers/Writers) | 17 | 16 | 33 | ✓ Good |
| Format Conversion | 38 | 40 | 78 | ✓ Excellent |

Critical Path Testing¶
Essential workflows have both unit and integration tests:
| Workflow | Unit Tests | Integration Tests |
|---|---|---|
| Read MARC record | 3 (reader.rs) | 16 (integration_tests.rs) |
| Write MARC record | 4 (writer.rs) | Part of roundtrip |
| Query fields | 17 (field_query.rs) | 17 (field_query_integration.rs) |
| Encoding/decoding | 43 (encoding.rs) | 6 (encoding included) |
| Format conversion | 38 (json/xml/etc) | 40 (various) |
| Authority records | 13 | 8 |
| Holdings records | 21 | 4 |
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - All critical paths tested
4. Test Code Quality¶
Readability and Clarity¶
Unit tests are clear and focused:
#[test]
fn test_record_builder_with_fields() {
let leader = create_default_leader();
let mut record = Record::builder(leader)
.control_field("001", "12345")
.field(Field::builder("245", '1', '0')
.subfield('a', "Title")
.build())
.build();
assert_eq!(record.get_control_field("001"), Some("12345"));
}
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Clear intent, good variable names
Test Isolation¶
Tests properly isolated: - ✓ No shared state between tests - ✓ Each test creates its own records/data - ✓ No external dependencies (except test data files) - ✓ Tests can run in any order
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Proper isolation
Edge Case Coverage¶
Tests include edge cases: - Empty records - Malformed data - Truncated records (recovery mode) - Invalid encodings - Boundary conditions - Round-trip conversions
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Good edge case coverage
5. Test Fixtures and Helpers¶
Test Record Creation¶
Common patterns for test setup:
Helper functions in test modules:
fn create_test_record() -> Record {
// Standard setup with fields
}
fn create_default_leader() -> Leader {
// Valid leader with standard values
}
Status: ✓ GOOD - Reduces duplication in tests
Test Data Files¶
Real MARC binary files used for integration tests: - simple_book.mrc - Book record - music_score.mrc - Music material - authority_record.mrc - Authority data - multilingual_records.mrc - MARC-8 encoded records
Status: ✓ GOOD - Real data improves confidence
6. Testing Approach: Unit vs Integration¶
Unit Test Strengths¶
✓ Fast execution (0.01s for 282 tests)
✓ Test isolated functionality
✓ Test error conditions easily
✓ Easy to locate failures
Examples: - MARC-8 escape sequence parsing (encoding.rs - 43 tests) - Record builder patterns (record.rs - 43 tests) - Field indicator validation (validation.rs - 13 tests)
Integration Test Strengths¶
✓ Test real-world workflows
✓ Test module interactions
✓ Use real MARC binary data
✓ Test with actual files
Examples: - Read/write round-trip (integration_tests.rs - 16 tests) - Field queries on realistic records (field_query_integration.rs - 17 tests) - Authority record workflows (field_linkage_integration.rs - 28 tests)
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Balanced approach, good separation
7. Test Organization Issues Identified¶
Minor Issues (Low Severity)¶
Issue #1: Scattered Module Tests - Some modules have both unit tests in src and integration tests in tests/ - Could be more organized, but current separation is reasonable
Issue #2: Test Data Path Hardcoding
- Path is relative to project root - Works in CI/CD, but assumes working directoryMitigation: Use env!("CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR") for robustness
Issue #3: Test File Organization in tests/ - Files organized by feature, not by module - Generally good, but some duplication possible
8. Test Naming Consistency¶
File Naming¶
Integration test files follow pattern:
- integration_tests.rs - Basic I/O
- field_query_integration.rs - Feature-specific
- record_helpers_trait.rs - Trait tests
- indicator_validation.rs - Validation
Status: ✓ GOOD - Mostly consistent
Function Naming¶
All test functions follow test_<feature>_<scenario>:
- test_read_simple_book_record
- test_fields_by_indicator_lcsh
- test_indicator_validation_650_0
Status: ✓ EXCELLENT - Clear and consistent
9. Documentation in Tests¶
Test Comments¶
Most tests include comments explaining purpose:
#[test]
fn test_marc8_escape_sequence_g0() {
// Test G0 (basic character set) switching via escape sequence
let input = b"Hello\x1B\x45World"; // ASCII -> ANSEL
let result = decode_marc8(input).unwrap();
assert!(result.contains("Hello"));
}
Status: ✓ GOOD - Comments explain intent
Test Organization Comments¶
Some modules have section comments:
// ============================================================================
// MARC-8 Decoding Tests
// ============================================================================
#[test]
fn test_marc8_ascii() { ... }
#[test]
fn test_marc8_with_escape_sequence() { ... }
Status: ✓ GOOD - Sections help navigation
10. Benchmarking and Performance Tests¶
Performance Testing¶
No explicit benchmark tests found. Tests focus on correctness, not performance.
Status: ⚠️ NO BENCHMARKS - Optional but useful

Recommendations¶
Immediate¶
- Standardize Test Data Paths (Very Low Priority)
- Consider using
env!("CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR")macro - Current hardcoding works but less robust
- Impact: Minimal, nice-to-have
Optional (Low Priority)¶
- Extract Common Test Helpers (Low Priority)
- Some test modules define similar helper functions
- Could move to shared
tests/common/mod.rs -
Trade-off: Minimal code savings vs organization
-
Add Benchmarks (Low Priority)
- Could add performance benchmarks for:
- MARC-8 decoding speed
- Large record parsing
- Field query performance
-
Current correctness-focused approach is good
-
Expand Authority/Holdings Tests (Low Priority)
- Authority records: 13 tests (adequate)
- Holdings records: 21 tests (adequate)
- Could add more complex scenarios
